Construction at the park in 2001
While the discussion and planning was several years in the making, we finally got the job done. The Board at NDMGS has been looking for a way to make a dream come true. In 2001 it finally is a reality. Through the generosity of the Polk County Betterment Grant program, and a renewed contract with Pepsi America we have been able to get 170 yards of concrete and over 100 tons of dirt put down around the concession stand and the driveways around the park. Additionally this project was assisted by two companies, American Concrete Products and Jensco Construction. They were willing to meet us at a lower price than usual to help us out. Also, the hard work and volunteer time by a few individuals made it happen. Being a non profit organization that relies solely on registration fees, fund raisers, and some local business support can make it extremely difficult to see a project of this magnitude to completion. I'm proud to say that with perseverance, hard work and a little luck dreams can come true. If the comments we have received about this project by visitors to the park are any indication, we did do the right thing. It is so much nicer to walk on a concrete walkway than rock for a normal person and is extremely better for those differently-abled. That was probably the main goal we were trying to achieve, make the park as accessible as possible. Plans are already under way to add concrete paths to the bleachers and to the fence gates. With all this said we thought some pictures of the before, during, and after might give everyone a sense of this project. It's not quite done, next spring when the grass comes up will really finish it off!!
